This trekking route is rated as one of the best in the region. The altitude varies from 2500m to 5000m and offers some of the most exquisite landscapes of the Himalayas. The diverse fauna and flora are also something which this trek offers. The best part of this trek is the spectacular view of Mt. Jomolhari from the Basecamp, Jangothang and it takes you through the Jigme Singye National Park. Day 1: Arrive Paro and sightseeing
Your guide and driver will receive you at the Paro International airport and drive to the Hotel.In the afternoon, visit Ta dzong (National museum of Bhutan) and Rinpung dzong built in 1644 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.In the evening, free to stroll in the town. Dinner and overnight in Hotel.
Day 2: Paro – Hike to the Tiger’s nest monastery (Taktsang)
In the morning, hike to the iconic Tiger’s nest monastery (Paro Taktsang). It is a 2 hours hike till the monastery from the base of the hill. In the afternoon, visit Drugyal dzong, the defense fortress built in 1649 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Then visit Kichu monastery, the oldest temple in Bhutan built in 659 AD by the Tibetan King Srongtsen Gampo. In the evening, visit to a Bhutanese farmhouse.
Dinner and overnight in Hotel.
Day 3: Paro – Shana – Thang Thanka
In the Morning, drive to Shana and start the Trek to Thang Thanka (Start of Jomolhari trek in Bhutan). Dinner and overnight in camp at the stone shelter.
Altitude: 3610 m; distance 22 Km; time 7 – 8 hours. (Ascent 770 m, Descent 10 m). Jomolhari trek difficulty: Strenuous.
Day 4: Thang Thangka – Jangothang
Today, we pass Tegethang, where the yak herders’ camp in winter. You will see many yaks before we enter Jangothang base camp. There is also a ruined dzong nearby that used to guard Bhutan in ancient times against the Tibetan forces.
Dinner and overnight in camp.
Altitude: 4080 m; Distance 19 Km; Time 5 – 6 hours. (Ascent 480 m). Jomolhari trek difficulty level: Strenuous.
Day 5: Jangothang Halt – Jomolhari Trek in Bhutan
For day hikes, you have 3 options on this day at Jangothang.
- Hike to Jomolhari glacier which is around 4 ½ hours (Back and forth).
- Hike to Jichu Drake glacier which is around 3 hours (Back and forth).
- Walk up the mountain between Jomolhari and Jichu Drake, the summit is at 5200 m with a great view of both the mountains. This is 8 hours (Back and forth).
Dinner and overnight in camp.
Day 6: Jangothang – Lingshi
Today we see the breathtaking view of Jichu Drake, Jomolhari and Tsherim gang. Then climb to the Nyeley la pass at an altitude of 4,700 m and descend to Lingshi. You can enjoy the beautiful view of Lingshi dzong. Dinner and overnight in camp (Altitude is 4010 m).
Distance: 18 km, hiking time: 6-7 hours, ascent 840 m, descent: 870 m, Jomolhari trek difficulty level: Strenuous.
Day 7: Lingshi – Shodu
We climb Yalila pass (4930 m), from where on a clear day, best views of Tserim gang, mount Jomolhari and Masagang will be seen.
Dinner and overnight in camp at Shodu. (Altitude: 4080 m).
Distance: 22 km, hiking time: 8-9 hours. (Ascent 940 m, descent 920 m). Jomolhari trek difficulty level: Strenuous.
Day 8: Shodu – Barshong
The route follows the Thimphu river, descending through rhododendron, juniper and other alpine forest. In the afternoon, the trail gradually ascends to the ruins of the Barshong dzong, reaching the camp. Dinner and overnight in camp (Altitude: 3710 m).
Distance: 16 km, walking time: 5-6 hours, Ascent 250 m, Descent: 670 m.
Day 9: Barshong – Thimphu
The trail is downhill through alpine forest and we once again join Thimphu river for a while.
Your vehicle will pick you up and drive to Thimphu.
Distance: 4 km, walking time: 2 hours, Ascent: 290 m, Descent: 640 m.
Day 10: Thimphu sightseeing – Paro
Today sightseeing in Thimphu including visit to Hand-made paper factory and weekend market.
You can also witness archery match.
In the evening, drive to Paro (54 km, 1 hour drive).
Dinner and overnight in Hotel.
Day 11: Depart from Paro
